PSG Flying High with KLM Cityhopper
PSG and Sherwin-Williams were delighted with the "highest overall score" in a direct system and process comparison with other paint manufacturers, organised by QAPS (Quality Aircraft Painting Services) and KLM Cityhopper.
In a drive for efficiency, QAPS - part of the STTS group - and KLM Cityhopper presented four leading aerospace paint manufacturers with a Fokker 70, which required complete stripping and repainting in KLM colours and livery. The challenge was to demonstrate the latest technologies with particular emphasis on "green" and time saving credentials in relation to weight, material and process.
Durng the first phase each participant was scored on pre-agreed efficiency and saving requirements, with a specific focus on finish quality. PSG and Sherwin-Williams used chrome free primer combine with base coat/clear coat topcoat technology, developed for OEM and refinish applications, and achieved the highest overall score out of all four participants for the first phase. The second phase is currently in progress, with KLM Cityhopper closely monitoring the planes in operaton over the next 24 months.
European Sales Manager at PSG, Erik de Tombe, said: "It has been a challenge indeed. Not only for the participating manufacturers but also for the QAPS painters. Our 'best out of 4' accolade is a testament to Sherwin-Williams' strategy of developing unique and differentiating technologies. The new technology is proving to be very promising."
